The double yellow line means do not cross. It is not okay for you to cross it, even if it's convenient. Drivers in the carpool lane are often going faster and it is the difference in speed which is dangerous. That's why there's a line that you're not allowed to cross.
Enter and exit the carpool lane only at designated points!

The Glory of the Spork
Imagine that you are sitting in a nice Asian restaurant eating fried rice. You use a spoon to get a nice scoop full of rice. But wait! Look at that nice crisp [YOUR FAVORITE VEGETABLE HERE]! You attempt to scoop up the vegetable on top of your spoonful of rice, but it rolls off. You can't do it! You could use a fork, but then most of the rice would fall through. But if you had a spork, you could scoop the rice and then stab the vegetable! You'd be the big winner! You see, BOB thought of all of this when he created the spork. If you had thought of this also, you wouldn't have been eating fried rice with a spoon.
